Eligibility to become a Australian Citizen

  • You are over 18-years-old
  • You must provide evidence that you have sufficient knowledge of  English
  • You are a permeant resident of Australia.
  • You have lived in Australia as a PR for at least 1,095 days in the past 5 years before your application.
  • You have filed your taxes for at least 3 years during the last 5 years and you do not owe any income tax to Australian government.

Language requirement                                                                                                                                             

You must submit one of these documents as proof that you have a good knowledge of English to apply for Australian Citizenship.

  • English proficiency test report equivalent to at least CLB/NCLC 4, even if you submitted with your P.R application.
  • A transcript, diploma, or certificate from a secondary or post-secondary school program completed in English

Residency requirements

You must have lived in Australia as a permanent resident for at least 3 out of the 5 years right before the day you apply. You cannot count time spent as a non-permanent resident toward residence for citizenship, you must prove that you intend to reside in Australia.

Ineligibility

If you have committed a crime in or outside Australia, you may not be eligible to become a Australian citizen for a certain period of time. This includes if you:

  • If you are serving a sentence outside Australia.
  • If you are serving a term of imprisonment, on parole or on probation in Australia.
  • If you are charged with, on trial for, or involved in an appeal of an indictable offence in Australia or outside Australia.
  • if you have been convicted in the four years before applying for citizenship of an indictable offence in Australia or outside Australia.
